Why This Easter Day?
How large was the stone rolled,
And heavy the tree carried
What wealth earned in gold pieces sold
And sorrow felt when He was buried.
His tattered limbs from hateful hands,
Nobility shorn disgraced.
Did stumble beneath vengeful plans,
And mocked this scene unchaste
The king replaced with sinners crowns.
The fiery fool doth cheer.
His regal presence thrown to ground,
The worlds blackness here.
So what to smile or sing about?
Why this Easter song?
The Son vanquished with little doubt,
Amid the jeering throng
The celebrations we do share.
The praise and glory in full bloom.
Seem lost without their titled heir.
A wedding bereft the groom.
Should we have yet despair and grief,
As Mary’s garden cry?
Or the ridiculing sceptic’s scorn
As in Thomas’s faltering reply?
For surely not!
The anthem words ring true.
He lives! He lives! The price was bought,
His body born anew.
The callous bands which chained,
Crest pieced by hideous thorn,
The innocent garden grass bloodstained,
Is paled to Easter’s morn.
The words refrained
He lives! He lives!
The glorious chorus thus obtained
So what to smile or sing about?
Why this Easter song?
My hellish sins are now paid out.
My soul no longer wrong.
The Savior paid my price.
Redeemed my traitor heart.
And thus this glorious advice,
Never from him depart
He is the way.
The light that shines.
So when you go astray,
Remember him, his tomb enshrines
He conquered death today.
